How FSC- and PEFC-certified paper, cardboard, and wood-based materials can serve as a more sustainable alternative for many indoor applications. Other PVC-free materials—such as PP, PET, polyester, and textiles—offer further possibilities.

In the printing and advertising technology sector, sustainability does not begin with the finished product. It starts much earlier: with the question of which material is used in the first place.

For many of our customers, avoiding PVC wherever technically feasible is already a key component of their sustainability strategy. In our view, this question should be asked as a matter of principle for every project:

Disclaimer:

Designating material as FSC or PEFC is not the same as having one's own certification. This point is important to us because sustainability communication must remain transparent and credible. FOTOREKLAME itself does not hold its own FSC or PEFC certification.

Materials designated as FSC or PEFC do not automatically mean that every processing facility is itself FSC or PEFC certified. In the case of PEFC, for example, Chain-of-Custody certification serves to verify the use of wood from sustainably managed forests during the processing stage.

Does it really have to be PVC – or is there a better, more suitable, and more resource-efficient alternative?

Especially for indoor applications, PVC can be replaced in a great many cases. Depending on the intended duration of use, stability, visual appearance, fire safety requirements, installation method, and budget, options include paper, cardboard, honeycomb board, wood-based materials, PP, PET, polyester, textile materials, or other PVC-free solutions.

And as soon as paper, cardboard, or wood-based materials are used, two terms play a particularly important role:

FSC and PEFC.

Both systems provide guidance regarding the origin of wood, paper, and cardboard products. FSC distinguishes between labels such as FSC 100%, FSC Mix, and FSC Recycled. FSC Recycled denotes products made from recycled material, while FSC Mix indicates combinations of FSC-certified materials, recycled material, and controlled sources. PEFC employs, among other things, a "Chain of Custody" approach—a product chain certification that allows the path of sustainable, PEFC-certified wood to be traced through the processing stages.

For companies with sustainability guidelines, procurement policies, ESG requirements, or internal material specifications, FSC- and PEFC-certified materials are therefore an important component of project planning.

At FOTOREKLAME, this commitment goes beyond mere theory. We stock materials in-house to suit a wide range of applications, formats, and thicknesses. Across approximately 360 Euro-pallet spaces, we store sheet, roll, paper, cardboard, and wood-based materials for printing, signage production, and interior applications.

For stock items made of paper, cardboard, or wood, we do not carry any products that are not certified by FSC or PEFC, or even dually certified.

Accurate classification is key here: we are not establishing our own FSC or PEFC certification for FOTOREKLAME. Rather, the focus is on how we designate the materials we stock and on our commitment to making more sustainable material choices genuinely available and feasible for day-to-day production.

After all, more sustainable advertising technology requires more than just good intentions. It requires knowledge of materials, available alternatives, storage space, machinery, experience, and people who can quickly turn it all into a successful project.

What does FSC mean?

FSC materials stacked like fan-fold paper on a printer

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. It is an international certification system for more responsible forest management and for products made from wood, paper, and cardboard.

In practice, one frequently encounters various FSC labels:

  • FSC 100% stands for material from FSC-certified forests.
  • FSC Mix stands for a blend of FSC-certified materials, recycled material, and controlled sources.
  • FSC Recycled stands for products made from recycled material.

FSC is relevant for printing, advertising technology, displays, signage, paper composites, honeycomb cardboard panels, and wood-based materials because it provides a clearer indication of the origin of the materials used.

Or simply put:

FSC helps in making more conscious choices regarding paper, cardboard, and wood materials.

What does PEFC stand for?

PEFC materials stacked like a fan on a printer

PEFC stands for Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. PEFC is also a system for sustainable forest management and for tracking wood and paper products along the supply chain.

The PEFC Chain of Custody is particularly relevant for companies. This chain-of-custody certification makes it possible to track the path of sustainable, PEFC-certified wood through the processing stage. Wood and paper processing companies demonstrate their use of wood from sustainably managed forests by means of a PEFC Chain of Custody certificate.

For customers, this means:

PEFC-certified material provides guidance on whether raw materials such as wood, paper, or cardboard originate from traceable sources.

In the printing and advertising technology sectors, PEFC is particularly relevant for paper, cardboard, wood-based materials, packaging materials, and sheet materials.

FSC or PEFC: Which is better?

For many projects, the most important answer is initially not “either-or,” but rather:

Is the material used verifiably certified as FSC or PEFC?

FSC and PEFC differ in terms of structure, standards, and procedures. However, when it comes to actual application in printing, signage, and interior communication, the focus is often on very practical questions:

  • Is the material suitable for indoor use?
  • Can it replace PVC?
  • Is it stable enough?
  • Is it suitable for printing?
  • Can it be cut, milled, laminated, or mounted?
  • Is it available on short notice?
  • Does it align with the client's sustainability requirements?

Even the best material is of little use if it is not suited to the application. That is why we do not view FSC and PEFC in isolation, but always in the context of function, location of use, durability, processing, and availability.

For which applications are FSC and PEFC materials particularly interesting?

FSC- and PEFC-certified materials are of interest wherever paper, cardboard, or wood-based materials can be used to technical advantage.

Typical applications include:

  • more sustainable POS displays
  • Point-of-sale display
  • Promotional areas in retail
  • Interior signage
  • temporary guidance systems
  • Messegrafiken
  • Event graphics
  • Exhibition Graphics
  • Museum texts
  • Information boards
  • Display areas
  • Wall panels
  • Office and Commercial Signage
  • Shop and showroom graphics
  • Direct printing on sheet materials
  • Sample panels and material presentations

Evaluating materials pays off, especially for indoor applications. Not every sign needs to be made of plastic. Not every temporary graphic requires PVC. Not every display needs to be heavier, more expensive, or more material-intensive than the task demands.

Sustainability and rapid implementation are not mutually exclusive. A common misconception is that more sustainable materials are automatically more complicated, more expensive, or slower to implement. That is not the case.

If materials are available, processing methods are known, and consultation begins early enough, FSC, PEFC, or PVC-free alternatives can be used very efficiently.

  • A lighter material can simplify transport and assembly.
  • Having material in stock can save procurement time.
  • A suitable material can reduce scrap.
  • A well-planned system can be reused.
  • A clear decision on materials can shorten review cycles.

Sustainability is therefore not automatically a cost factor. Good advice on materials can actually help avoid unnecessary costs and complexity.

What you should include in your inquiry

If your company operates under sustainability guidelines, the following information will assist with the inquiry:

  • Place of work
  • Einsatzdauer
  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • desired quantity
  • desired format
  • Material thickness
  • Requirements regarding PVC avoidance
  • Requirements regarding FSC or PEFC
  • Fire protection requirements
  • Mounting type
  • Reusability
  • Timing and delivery date
  • Requirements from procurement, ESG, marketing, or corporate design

The clearer these points are, the more quickly we can assess which materials make sense and whether PVC can be replaced.

Thanks to our inventory, we can quickly recommend suitable materials for many applications and move projects into production on short notice.

Conclusion: More sustainable advertising technology starts with the material.

FSC and PEFC serve as important points of reference when paper, cardboard, or wood-based materials are used in printing and advertising projects. They help companies make more informed material choices and better translate sustainability guidelines into practice. However, a certification label alone does not guarantee a successful project.

The decisive factors are whether the material is suitable for the application, whether PVC can be replaced, whether it is available, and whether it is processed professionally. This is precisely where FOTOREKLAME comes in.

We combine material expertise, stock availability, production experience, and practical implementation. With around 360 Euro-pallet spaces, a wide range of materials in various thicknesses and formats, and a clear commitment to stocking FSC- and PEFC-certified products, we make more sustainable material choices not only possible but also quick to implement.

Replace PVC wherever it makes sense to do so. Use FSC- and PEFC-certified materials where paper, cardboard, and wood-based products offer the better solution. Evaluate PVC-free plastics—such as PP, PET, polyester, and textiles—when they are technically better suited to the application. And use these to create signage and display solutions that work. That is our standard.

FAQ: FSC, PEFC, and PVC-free advertising technology

What is FSC? A simple explanation.

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. FSC is an international certification system for more responsible forest management and for products made from wood, paper, and cardboard. Categories include FSC 100%, FSC Mix, and FSC Recycled, among others.

What is PEFC – explained simply?

PEFC stands for Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. PEFC is a certification system for sustainable forest management and the tracking of wood and paper products along the supply chain. The "Chain of Custody"—the verification of the product chain—is of particular importance in this context.

What is the difference between FSC and PEFC?

FSC and PEFC are distinct certification systems, each with its own standards and procedures. Both provide guidance regarding the origin of wood, paper, and cardboard materials. For many signage and display projects, the crucial factor is simply that the material used carries FSC, PEFC, or equivalent certification.

Why are FSC and PEFC important for the signage and display industry?

FSC and PEFC are important when paper, cardboard, or wood-based materials are used for displays, signs, POS materials, trade show graphics, or interior applications. They help companies better justify more sustainable material choices.

Can PVC be replaced in the signage and advertising industry?

Yes, PVC can often be replaced, particularly in indoor applications. Depending on the project, materials such as paper, cardboard, honeycomb board, wood-based materials, PP, PET, polyester, textiles, or other PVC-free solutions are suitable options.

Are there other PVC-free alternatives besides FSC and PEFC materials?

Yes. FSC and PEFC primarily apply to materials made of wood, paper, cardboard, and wood-based products. However, PVC-free signage materials also encompass other categories, such as PP, PET, polyester films, PVC-free plastics, and textile printing materials. For textiles, other standards and certifications—such as OEKO-TEX®—may be relevant. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 applies to textiles that have been tested for harmful substances.

Is FOTOREKLAME FSC- or PEFC-certified?

No, FOTOREKLAME does not hold its own FSC or PEFC certification; however, we ensure that only materials bearing the appropriate certification are stocked and processed. Our standards regarding materials are the deciding factor: for stock items made of paper, cardboard, or wood, we do not carry any products that are not certified by FSC, PEFC, or—in some cases—both.

Does FOTOREKLAME have more sustainable materials in stock?

Yes. FOTOREKLAME has space for around 360 Euro-pallets and stocks materials in-house for a wide range of applications, formats, and thicknesses. This allows many projects to be executed quickly using suitable material alternatives.

For which applications are FSC- and PEFC-certified materials suitable?

Typical applications include POS displays, stand-up displays, indoor signage, wayfinding systems, trade show and exhibition graphics, presentation panels, wall panels, in-store communication, and direct printing onto suitable sheet materials.

Are PVC-free alternatives automatically more expensive?

Not automatically. If the material is suitable for the application and available, PVC-free or FSC/PEFC-certified materials can make a great deal of economic sense. Expert material advice helps avoid unnecessary costs, delays, and rounds of coordination.
