The newly opened Lügenstein Museum in Würzburg is the result of our successful collaboration. Guests can relax and socialize in the inviting café area while enjoying coffee, cake, and selected German quality wines. At the rear of the former locksmith’s workshop, visitors will find the exhibition dedicated to the "Lügensteine" (Lying Stones) of Würzburg. Dr. Petra Hubmann, who has conducted extensive research on this subject for over 20 years, presents exciting new findings here and invites visitors to discover this fascinating story.

Task: Complete installation of a museum exhibition

For a museum exhibition with a distinctive design aesthetic, we realized a temporary spatial structure—complete with graphic cladding—within a three-week timeframe, including seven days of on-site installation. The project was executed in close coordination with the client and based on a design by Paul Beaury of museeon.

1. Design, printing, and assembly of exhibition walls and spaces

2. Delivery of the material

3. Construction of the timber substructure
• A combination of roofing and theatre battens
• Ground boreholes for stability
• Batten structure as a framework for mounting the walls
• Door frames and crossbars for stabilization

 

4. Installation of the exhibition walls
• Precise alignment of the printed exhibition walls
• Alignment using laser technology, a spirit level, and shims.
• Installation by pre-drilling and screwing

Material:

The following materials were primarily used in this project:

• B1-rated MDF boards, printed
• Wood, roof battens, theater battens
• Acrylic Glass
• SA-Vinyl

Execution:

First, MDF panels were printed with the black-and-white design—including specific color accents—provided by the artist (exhibition designer). Subsequently, we organized the logistics for all materials and tools required for on-site installation.

In total, we printed, sawed, primed, painted, screwed, glued, drilled, and assembled 3.5 tons of material.

Assembly began with the construction of a timber framework—measuring approximately 11 by 11 meters and standing about 3 meters high—inside a former metalworking hall. This structure serves as the load-bearing base for four walk-in rooms. The floor elements were securely fastened to the ground with long screws, while vertical supports and crossbeams were erected and stabilized with additional wall supports.

Once the timber substructure was completed, the printed MDF panels were mounted with millimetre precision using small spacer blocks. Achieving this level of accuracy—including the creation of shadow gaps at the floor and room corners—required the use of small spacers (such as blocks) and laser measuring devices. This was particularly necessary due to the unevenness of the hall floor.

We also clad the doorways using white-printed MDF panels. We precisely aligned, pre-drilled, and installed all the panels on site.

Following the wall mounting, a number of various design elements were added, including:

• Flaps in the wall design
  • Fitted with antique-style furniture hinges
  • Custom sign mounting with acorn nuts
• Milled exhibits suspended from stainless steel wire ropes (installed by the museum)
• “Lying Stones” – partly genuine, partly replicas (also installed by the museum)
• Acrylic glass panels with 50 mm spacers, serving as protective covers and handle guards.
• Mirror-finish Dibond for mirrored surfaces
• Two accessible doors to the rear of the structure and for access to the office spaces.
• Custom TV enclosure matching the exhibition design
• Application of specially cut vinyl graphics to the four central exhibition tables
• Supply of matching acrylic glass covers to cover and protect the table surfaces.
• Vinyl graphics on the front glazing to showcase the exhibition externally.

 
The project combined sophisticated design with precision craftsmanship. Despite challenging conditions—specifically the uneven hall floor and complex geometry—we succeeded in realizing a structure that was highly precise, aesthetically impressive, and exceptionally stable. Thanks to close collaboration with the client and meticulous advance planning, the implementation proceeded smoothly.
